When we venture out with the baby it seems like we have to take everything with us… Nappies, bottles, wipes, soothers, toys….and that’s just for baby. It seems the must have accessory to go with baby is the stylish changing bag. Celebs throughout the world are gracing the covers of magazines with them but are they essential? Lara Green from Babyworld.co.uk has been testing out changing bags with a panel of parents. We asked her what points parents should consider when looking to purchase this product.
Changing bags seem to be big business now Lara?
They are definitely something that’ve grown in popularity. A lot of Mums would say that they did without a changing bag but now there are hundreds on the market. They have become a lot more practical as well.
Are they essential?
I would say they’re not essential. It really depends on you and whether you think it would be a requirement. They do come with bottle warmers, changing mats but if you have a bag that can offer all of that then they’re not essential. You can buy changing mats and bottle warmers independently. There are so many gorgeous bags available now and there are a lot of designer brands coming onto the market. They do look like handbags so you could get a few years out of them, even when your baby is out of nappies.
If you want to buy one, maybe as a gift, what should you look for?
It depends on the Mum. If you have a fashion conscious mum it’s good to look for something that’s trendy and stylish. You can go into any baby boutique and they’ll have them in there.
It’s worth looking at something that’s versatile and practical, perhaps something that they can slip over the back of the buggy.
We tested nine in total and they did note that some were too heavy and not comfortable.
What about fabric?
Most bags will be washable and there are a lot of wipe clean style bags. There’s a lot of leather options which are more expensive.
Which bags did your panel like?
We had two that came out well. One called the Caboodle Classic. It’s not mega stylish but in terms of value for money it had everything you needed. The Baby Traveller all in one won Best Buy because it was quite neat and compact. It had a good layout in the inside. It was a unisex one too so Dads wouldn’t be embarrassed to use it.
