Situated in the heart of the Midlands, Birmingham is widely known as England’s second city. Pictured on the left is Birmingham’s landmark site “the bullring shopping centre”. The city’s reputation was forged as a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, a fact which led to Birmingham being known as “the workshop of the world” or the “city of a thousand trades”.
It has an airport and a number of football clubs but is it worth a visit with the family? Local woman Kerry Flynn says “definitely”. Kerry is Mummy to Logan, 8 and Hennessey, 4. She lives just out of the city centre but is a regular visitor.
So, what has Birmingham got to offer?
We’ve got parks and theme parks, we’re not to far from the countryside so there are farms and nature parks. It’s easy to get around even when you’ve got bags and pushchairs.
There’s loads available for people to do. We’ve got museums and parks. It’s coming on loads. It was always seen as a factory city….it’s a really lovely place to visit now. It’s quite compact and it’s easy to get around. We’ve recently had the new Bullring Centre and that’s really accessible.
The restaurants in Birmingham are for families. We have Millenium Point which is fantastic for children. They have lots of activities and they have a little childrens section. We have the Museum and Gallery which is also worth a look.
Is it worth visiting?
Definitely. There are loads of shops with baby facilities. There are places to go and breastfeed. When I had Logan there weren’t as many places but there are now and there are places for men to go too.
We have buggy buses, you pop straight onto the bus with your pushchair. You can even get on with these double pushchairs.
Your children are 8 and 4, What activities do you look for?
You need to know both are catered for. We generally go out on bike rides. We go to our local parks - Canon Hill Park (awarded green flag status) which has a nature centre and a lake. We also go to Sutton Park (Birmingham’s largest park) We have Drayton Manor by us and it’s a fantastic place but it’s so expensive. Drayton Manor is like Alton Towers but it caters more for the children. The zoo is there too which is nice and they do shows there, you can spend the whole day there. West Midlands Travel also do trips from the city centre. We’re also near Warwickshire so there are lots of walks. Warwick Castle is a huge tourist attraction, it’s lovely but it’s very expensive. There’s also Kenilworth and Tamworth Castle which are cheaper.
What is your top-money saving tip for days out?
Look in the newspapers for money-off vouchers. They’re always helpful and take packed lunches!
