Doula, what they do! Faq’s

What is a Doula

What is a DoulaDue to the amount of questions we get asked about (what is a Doula) and what they do, we thought we’d do a special interview all about the job of a Doula.

In this interview we spoke to Valerie Goedkoop who started getting interested in childbirth a few years ago when she saw friends and relatives having babies in sometimes difficult or unfulfilling situations.

Then, she had her first two children, both positive but very different experiences. After many years working for multi-national companies, Valerie left her managerial job in London including the stresses and decided to focus on her passion: pregnancy, labour and early years.

For many reasons, becoming a doula seemed to be the perfect job for her. As a doula she has supported over 70 families and continues to do so as an independent doula throughout the UK.

  1. I am considering becoming a Doula and this is the first information I have accessed to explain what a Doula does.  It was very informative and I am more interested now and want to get started.

Would you suggest working with the mother in her home or to be employed in a hospital more challenging?  Obviously working in a home would be the first option if one is not very experienced although I am a mother myself of 3 grown up children which already gives a wealth of experience.

I would be grateful if you could give me some idea of what the earning potential would be before I embark on this career change.
