In this interview we spoke to parent coach and former deputy head teacher Sue Atkins about setting examples for your children. In today’s society it seems that we could be provoking our children to sneer and jeer at vunerable people without even realising it. Sue says “Programmes like Britains Got Talent doesn’t help the situation as these programmes encourage the living room environment to partake in laughing at people in vunerable situations”. In fact Paul Watson, one of Britain’s foremost TV directors won a BAFTA recently as one of the first directors of reality TV. What was very interesting about Paul’s acceptance speech was how he attacked the bullying culture behind a lot of today’s reality TV.
Back in the 1960’s Paul’s vision for reality TV was to inform and to show real life, warts and all, which was quite a break from tradition in those early days of reality TV, but he went on to say the idea of these shows was never to mock and humiliate the people he was filming.
Whatever your views this is a very interesting debate and one that we feel grants some valuable discussion. After listening to Sue’s interview below why not read her article by CLICKING HERE. Or take at look at Sue’s site at positive-parents.com
