Liverpool is 2008’s European Capital of Culture - joint holders with Stavanger, Norway. It had a lot of money injected into the city and there are museums, galleries and shops galore - not to mention Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs. People from the city in the North West of England are known as Scousers.
The popularity of The Beatles and other groups from the Merseybeat era contributes to Liverpool as a tourist destination but as My Baby Radio listener Clare Delve explains there’s lots more to do!
Clare is born and bred in Liverpool, works in the city and is mum to Patrick.
What’s Liverpool like as a city?
I do love Liverpool, I’ve lived and worked elsewhere and I’ve always come back to Liverpool.
It’s not just about The Beatles?
I’ve read this quite a lot that people think there’s nothing more to Liverpool than The Beatles and Matthew Street but there’s a lot of culture here. The better sides of Liverpool are very rarely shown.
Scousers are known to be friendly. Would you agree?
People do stop and talk to you. You’re always able to have a joke with a lot of the sales assistants. People don’t ignore you and I think that’s where the friendliness comes from.
How are you getting on as a first time Mum?
It’s took a lot of adjusting to. I’m just getting into it and starting to enjoy it. When I get to the second one…you’ll feel like you know a lot more. You concentrate a lot on what you should be doing.
I’m finding my own way and starting to trust what I think is right.
Is there a lot to do in Liverpool?
There’s plenty to do and I think there’ll be even more in the summer. I went back to the antenatal class with some friends I met, when we went back we decided we’d carry on meeting on the same day with the babies. We used to meet for a coffee…we called ourselves the Yummy Mummies. It’s relaxed, some of us will have lunch, some of us won’t and it’s nice because the children are all the same age.
We’ve got a dog and there are plenty of places to go for a walk, we’ve got Sefton Park and lots of others. They’re easy to get around with the pram too. I’ve been to the cinema with Patrick in Woolton. It’s great fun, they just fall asleep in the car seat and you get to have a bit of time out. We also go to Water Babies, it’s in a hydrotherapy pool so it’s great and the babies love it.
