Over 70% of new Mums would like to meet new friends to share problems and get advice. However, according to latest research they do not know how to go about it.
More than 350 parents were polled by the website What’s On For Little Ones, Sam Willoughby commissioned the survey. She told My Baby Radio that said she was surprised by the findings.
“We knew that Mums went out and joined groups but we were surprised that so many would like to have found more Mums to share experiences with”.
Sam believes that things change once you become a mother. She herself started her own business after having her own daughter and feeling isolated.
“I knew I needed to get out and about and my family lived a long way away. I wanted to add structure to my week and do things with my baby.
Until you have your first child you don’t realise how many different things you come across and you can almost never have too many friends to talk to about it. It’s hard to speak to people who either don’t have children or had their children a while ago because it’s easy to forget.
You can never have too many people to help you, especially those first few months,” she said.
Many parents do not have the support of their families. More and more families have dispersed and the days when Grandparents and parents lived in the same house are a distant memory.
“We are further away from our friends and families now and it’s not so easy,” added Sam.
There are a number of mother and toddler groups and parenting activities now but the survey discovered that more than 40% of people did not know that they existed.
Sam said there are lots of activites for parents of young children which in turn gets them out of the house and socialising.
“There are lots of sensory play things which are good for babies development. There is also baby signing, baby yoga and the list goes on…there’s no need to be sat inside feeling lonely.”
