Parents with children across the UK have just conducted a poll about the August summer holidays and are definatley feeling the stress of the six week break. Calls have gone out to the Government to cut the school summer holiday from six weeks to three.
The plea has been made by parents from across the UK who took part in a survey by Internet radio station My Baby Radio.Com.
Of the 4,227 people polled, 80% said they wanted a shorter break and they urged ministers to introduce funded play schemes to keep their little ones off the streets, many parents also favoured summer camps like the US.
One mum told My Baby Radio: “I would like to see youth clubs and play areas which aren’t full of kids drinking alcohol”.
Another said she would welcome “groups for older kids aged 10-16. There’s nothing for them to do and some get rowdy”.
More than half of all parents polled said they couldn’t wait to see their kids return to school - having found the summer holidays stressful and expensive.
Many participants said it was “great to spend time with their children”.
However, others said they were left trying to juggle child care and had to take time off from work.
Parents surveyed also said they were left scratching their heads to find something for their children to do who complained of being “bored”.
60% of parents who entered the survey said they found days out and childcare “expensive”.
Plus, a further 32% said they were aware of the looming credit crunch and found booking holidays during the summer break “costly”.
Others said they would like to see “extra learning, discounted local events and cheaper bus travel”.
