Lara Green from Babyworld.co.uk has been testing out highchairs with a panel of parents. We asked her what points parents should consider when picking a highchair for their little one.
What should parents look for in a highchair?
There are lots of design options available now. There are still the plastic chairs with metal legs and they’re good as a bog standard model. There’s a lot of really good wooden models now. Things like a safety harness are important, padded fabrics to make it more comfortable and things like a neat and compact fold mechanism.
Things like a good sized tray are important and you can even get cup holders now.
Can parents buy highchairs that are easy to clean?
Something with a removable seat is a good idea - you can just put the seat in the washing machine or wipe it clean. Food can just get everywhere!
How popular are wooden highchairs?
Wooden models have become popular because they look lovely, they fit into the home really well and a lot of them double up as seats or an office chair which can be used by parents. They do last a long time compared to the plastic ones.
What if space is limited in your home and you don’t want a big highchair?
You can look at a booster seat or even a fabric seat which straps onto your dining room chair. You can just put it into the washing machine, they can be really easy to use and they’re good for travelling. They fit into your bag easily and they’re really compact. Even things like the Bumbo seat can be great for young babies and early weaners.
How much are highchairs?
It really does vary. The smallest is anything from £40 to £150 for the wooden ones.

I have been trying out a few highchairs recently and found a great one (well saw it had been awarded Practical Pre-School gold award). I was not dissapointed the Hauck Up’n down highchair has been brill. Height adjustable, a breeze to clean, and folds away small so when finished just pop it away what a result. Also really good value for money as highly colourful and great quality. Good strudy highchair and I can tell you this has been through the mill and back, so thumbs up from our household for sure and at £99.99 brill value too.
