It is not surprising that the Samsonite pop up travel cot has been voted a Mother & Baby Gold Award. I bought this product prior to baby number one arriving in March 2009, and have used it consistently since she was about 6 weeks old.
It is so lightweight - almost a third of the weight of a standard travel cot - which is brilliant. It all folds up into a handy little carrier, and would quite happily fit into a suitcase, if you needed it to.
Putting it together is pretty easy. It literally does what it says on the tin, and “pops” up. all you then need to do is insert two small rods in the roof, Velcro the mattress in, and you’re away! Putting it away requires a bit of nifty wrist action but once you’ve done it once, it’s like second nature.
We have actually used this cot as an alternative to a hotel provided Graco travel cot so we must like it. It was great on a week’s holiday in France. It’s a lot more compact than a lot of travel cots, and particularly great for campers.
The mattress isn’t too thick so we make sure we put the cot on a rug or something similar and then put a mini quilt over the mattress and baby looks very cosy.

Conclusion: If you are wanting a travel cot that also acts as a playpen, this is not the one for you. As it’s set on the floor, if you wanted your baby to have safe play, they probably wouldn’t like being zipped in with the mosquito net door! (Oh yes, the mosquito net is great for sunny holidays and kept our baby away from all the insects in France!)
The only other downside I see is that it will only last up to 18 months, and probably less if you have a big toddler. Hopefully by this point our baby will be verging on a big girl’s bed but we’ll see!
