    Timeout (U Time) |

Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier

jamaica-inn.jpgWow, this book is an old classic that never fails to impress. It’s the story of Mary Yellan who’s made a journey to be with her Aunt Patience at the spit and sawdust public house Jamaica Inn. However, all is not as it seems and the book has more twists and turns than a rollacoaster. From the minute I started reading the first few pages I was hooked. It takes you on a timeless journey that would not be out of place in the modern day. The main story is set at Jamaica Inn with Mary her aunt and her uncle Joss. There’s not a big cast of people in the book, which is good as you get to grips with the plot and characters straight away, plus every character is larger than life. Especially the vicar of Altarnun, watch out for him!

Whenever I read books these days I always seem to visualise a certain type of actor playing the roles. I have Anna Friel as Mary Yellan, Philip Glenister as Joss Merlyn and Jim Carter as the vicar of Altarnun.

To sum up, this is a classic winter tale that will have you hooked from begining to end, for me there was no downsides to reading this book. It was an absolute joy, and a great alternative read for Christmas. It’s always interesting to read a book that’s based on a real place too. Yes Jamaica Inn does exist, it’s in Cornwall, UK and you can even go there for a pint and some lunch. Wouldn’t it be great to read this book actually in Jamaica Inn.
