The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

time-traveller.jpgThis book is an unconventional love story that centres around a man with a strange genetic disorder. Henry’s condition causes him to unpredictably time-travel and his wife Clare has to cope with his frequent absences and dangerous experiences. Without giving to much of the plot away, Clare meets Henry in Chicago but she already knows him as he’s been visiting her in his future and her past as a little girl. Confused? Well, Audrey Niffenegger explains it better than me - she is the author after all. The pieces do start to fit together and it’s an interesting take on a love story.

I passed on the opportunity to read this book on many occasions as I felt it would be some sort of Dr Who tale or a science fiction novel. It wasn’t and I did like this book and I would recommend it. I often find myself thinking back to it and wondering what time in my life I would travel back to.

On the negative side, the fascination with the punk era and music of that generation was lost on me and I didn’t completely gel with the characters - I should’ve felt sorry for Clare but I didn’t - maybe I’m just cold-hearted. The novel does go full circle and watch out for the titanic-esque finish, I’m saying no more!
